Building Northern Virginia’s Future: The Construction Workforce Crisis
Northern Virginia is home to more active construction than almost anywhere in the country, and it doesn’t have enough people to build it. From data centers to schools to the roads connecting them, the region’s growth depends on skilled trades workers, and right now, the pipeline isn’t keeping up.
The Crisis, By the Numbers
The construction industry has a significant national talent shortage, and Northern Virginia sits at the center of it. The Associated Builders and Contractors estimates the industry needs roughly 349,000 net new workers nationally in 2026 alone, a number expected to climb again in 2027. Locally, the pressure is even more acute:
- Northern Virginia leads the nation in data center construction, with counties across Loudoun, Prince William, and Fairfax now home to hundreds of active or planned facilities.
- A single large campus can require 4,000 to 5,000 workers at peak construction, up from roughly 750 a decade ago.
- More than 1 in 5 construction workers nationally is 55 or older, and a wave of retirements is expected to accelerate over the next 5–7 years.
- Demand for electricians, HVAC technicians, and MEP trades has pushed wages higher, with journeyman electricians in the region now earning well above $100,000 a year, plus benefits.
This isn’t a temporary bottleneck. It’s a structural gap between the workers retiring and the workers coming in behind them, and it’s showing up in longer timelines, tighter budgets, and delayed projects across the region.

Every data center, road, hospital, and school in Northern Virginia depends on someone showing up to build it. When there aren’t enough skilled workers, projects slow down, costs rise, and the region’s ability to grow starts to strain. The construction crisis isn’t just an industry problem. - Hosting job fairs and hiring events that connect job seekers directly with contractors who have open positions, from entry-level laborer to project manager.
- Partnering with local schools and training providers to introduce students and career-changers to the trades before they’ve written off construction as an option.
- Working alongside regional partners, including ABC Virginia and the Heavy Construction Contractors Association (HCCA), to focus specifically on the future of the regional construction workforce.
- Highlighting real career pathways, so people considering the trades can see what training, advancement, and long-term earning potential actually look like.
